The AIS-PNG Board comprises of experienced professionals from a variety of disciplines who all share a firm link with-, or interest in Education and Papua New Guinea.
The board members will provide the school with advice, guidance and direction on a voluntary basis to support the continuous development of AIS-PNG. Governance practices require the School to formalize and disclose the roles and responsibilities of the School Board and its Members.
The Board will represent the school to the community, provide strategic guidance for the School and effectively oversee and review the School’s management and operations. Specifically, the School Board may be required to make decisions, engage in discussions or provide direct assistance in any of the following areas:

- Enhancement of the school's public standing and reputation.
- Ensure a strategic approach to the school’s future by setting major goals, policy frameworks and strategies.
- Set the tone and the ethical standards of the school and monitor adherence to them;
- Assist the school to respond to the distinctive characteristics of its academic environment and act in a way that exemplifies and reinforces the schools core values and ethos.
- Exercise fiduciary responsibility and oversight by analysing the school’s financial statements and any other relevant documents.
- Review plans and budgets established by school management.
- Review and monitor adherence to systems of risk management, governance and legal compliance.
- Monitor organisational performance
- Develop and maintain healthy relationships with key stakeholders and the broader community, using effective communication channels.
- Assist the school management team by implementing fund raising strategies through personal influence with others (corporations, foundations, individuals). ·
- Conduct an annual review of the School’s progress and performance in meeting its objectives
- Conduct an annual review of the Board’s own performance (i.e. Board Appraisal)
Ross ClarkDirector, PacificPlus Consulting Ross Clark is a Director of PacificPlus Consulting, a business providing leadership and governance consultancy to the Asia-Pacific region. He has a Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Psychology. Ross has taught, developed educational guidance services and led schools and educational institutions from early childhood to Technical and Further Education colleges. He developed a paraprofessional Indigenous counselling workforce that currently operates throughout Queensland and was instrumental in the establishment of a remote area teacher education program that has enabled over 200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island teachers to study and graduate where they live. Prior to retiring from Education Queensland, Ross was the Regional Director for Education for Far North Queensland. As a Director of PacificPlus Consulting Ross has more recently provided leadership development and support to medical staff in Queensland Health, and educational leadership services to schools across Australia and PNG. Joeri KalwijGen. Manager New Guinea Highlands Coffee Exports Ltd. Joeri Kalwij holds a position as General Manager of New Guinea Highlands Coffee Exports ltd; This is PNG's largest coffee exporter and manages supply chains throughout the country. The company focuses on the implementation of sustainable production methods, international certification standards and the development of (international) niche market access for producers. In 2008 Joeri moved to Goroka, Papua New Guinea where he worked in several executive positions in the PNG coffee industry. Prior to pursuing a career in Papua New Guinea, Joeri worked at Wageningen University in The Netherlands as a senior Policy Advisor to the Executive Board. Additional responsibilities in Joeri's portfolio were strategic development of IT in Education, he was PhD Coordinator, and secretary of the Graduate Schools. Alexandra HarringtonManager of the Events Team for Abt Management Services Alex is based in Papua New Guinea for Abt Management Services and in this role has the pleasure of working with a wide range of people and industries to promote the work of the PNG and Australian Governments. Alex is passionate about delivering events that build understanding, opportunities and relationships through storytelling and the exchange of ideas. In 2018 Alex and the team delivered the APEC Discussion Series at the Precinct as part of PNG’s APEC host year. For the first time, APEC discussions were extended beyond closed meeting rooms to be shared and debated by the public, international and local experts and leaders. Over the past six years Alex and her family have lived in the PNG and Torres Strait Region. Alex has previously held positions at the Australian Department of Environment in Canberra, the Torres Strait Regional Authority on Thursday Island and the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby. Alex is currently undertaking a Graduate Certificate in International Development with Deakin University. |
Mark BakerManaging Director of ANZ in Papua New Guinea Mark Baker is a highly experienced international banker having previously held senior roles with HSBC in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, India and Bahrain. Prior to taking up his current role with ANZ PNG in August 2012, Mark had overall responsibility for ANZ’s Corporate Banking activities in Queensland, covering private and public companies, with a particular focus on services to the Natural Resources sector. Mark brings with him a deep experience across a wide range of banking activities including Corporate and Institutional Banking, Commercial and SME, and Retail Banking, as well as key product lines including International Trade Services, Payments and Cash Management and Operations. In addition to his role at ANZ, Mark is Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board (PNG), a Board member of the Institute of Banking and Business Management (PNG), Vice President of the Australia PNG Business Council and Member of PNG Institute of Directors and Australian Institute of Company Directors. Lorraine MerimbaParent Representative Lorraine Merimba has a Diploma in Travel and Tourism from Martin College, Brisbane. With this background she gained experience working with a variety of international hospitality groups. Between 2009 and 2010 Lorraine was contracted for a position on the island of Lihir, Papua New Guinea, where she excelled in a variety of roles in HR, planning and recruitment to support the mining industry on this Island. Her extensive experience as a multi-tasker and planner brought her back to PNG permanently in 2015 where she settled in Goroka. She is a successful entrepreneur and supports the family business as Assistant Manager for Brutus Properties in Goroka. Lorraine brings with her a wealth of knowledge in the arena of organizational skills and creativity. She does so with unprecedented positive energy that she also brings into The Australian International School as Parent Representative to the Board. |
